Introduction
Since its opening in 2009, Nottingham Contemporary has established itself as a globally renowned institution for ambitious contemporary art exhibitions and exceptional research and learning programmes.
Stimulating bold discussions about culture and society, Nottingham Contemporary consistently presents thematic exhibitions that support artists at all different stages of their careers. For Spring 2025, they introduce the first international solo exhibition by multi-disciplinary Brazilian artist Allan Weber and the first major exhibition in a European institution by African-Puerto Rican painter and sculptor Daniel Lind-Ramos.

The Brief
Nottingham Contemporary enlisted us to create two visually compelling identities for their simultaneous Spring exhibitions. The graphic languages needed to carefully capture the essence of the artist’s exhibition.

The Output
We began by selecting typefaces that reflect the distinct artistic practices of Allan Weber and Daniel Lind-Ramos.
For Lind-Ramos, we chose a typeface with unconventional strokes that initially appears as a traditional serif. Much like his sculptures, the letterforms balance structure and fluidity, with their raw construction adding character and depth. The hyphen in his name became a key design element, introducing structure and variation within the typographic layouts.
For Weber, the exhibition title carried layered meanings, referencing the social and artistic structures of the favela and his experience as a food delivery rider fulfilling customer “orders.” We selected a typeface commonly found on everyday receipts—typically designed for small-scale legibility—but scaled it up to reveal its subtle imperfections, reinforcing the themes of his work.
