Exhibition design for Visceral Canker the major survey exhibition of the late British multi-media artist Donald Rodney

Introduction
The Autumn 24 exhibition at Nottingham Contemporary presents a comprehensive retrospective of the late British artist Donald Rodney. The display brings together nearly all of his surviving works, spanning painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, and digital media, alongside rare archival materials. This exhibition underscores Rodney’s pivotal role in shaping the recent history of British art.

The Brief
Nottingham Contemporary approached us to design the exhibition identity for the Donald Rodney: Visceral Canker exhibition. The brief was to create a visual language that captured the raw, visceral nature of Rodney’s work, while referencing the metaphorical social and political themes embedded in many of his pieces.

The Output
By abstracting Rodney’s recurring use of X-rays, we created a textured backdrop for the exhibition, pairing it with clean typography to establish a richly layered yet intuitively navigable identity.
