Introduction

Light After Dark: A film festival dedicated to immersive experiences in cinema. Pairing films with performance, music, technology, and art. Exploring cinema as modern magic.

The Brief

Upcoming film festival, Light After Dark, required a stand-out identity that retained a sense of romance and sensuality whilst feeling subversive and familiar yet out of reach. Inspired by the French new wave and mid-century graphic design, the Film Festival brand identity had to be referential but avoid being overtly nostalgic.

Deliverables for the project included all brand identity assets, web design, printed collateral, social media assets and video trailers.

The Output

The essence of the Light After Dark identity revolves around a beam of light emanating from a narrowed aperture in a dimly lit room. The notion that even a modest opening can flood a space with illumination struck us as a compelling concept, aligning seamlessly with Light After Dark’s aim of offering viewers a peek into immersive cinema experiences.

The circular aperture mechanism allows for subject matter to be framed within the imagery used by the brand, creating interesting reveals within the content.

Printed Collateral

We chose to explore the light/dark concept further for the festival’s printed collateral. The foldout guide was specifically designed to be printed on a 90gsm uncoated stock, allowing us to leverage the substrate’s translucency. When held up to the light, the reverse side of the print creates the illusion that the festival logo is glowing, adding an illuminating effect.
